I am available for school visits and writing workshop presentations for all ages.
You ARE a Poet: Students are led to write four different styles of poetry by studying coordinating, contemporary children's books. Beginning with a tight, constricted form and moving towards free verse, students learn about word choice, imagery, economy of language, and rhythm. The course was originally designed for middle school students, and works best as five two-hour sessions. However, it can be adapted to fit students fifth grade through high school. Individual poetic styles can also be taught in two class periods.
From Paragraph to Free Verse: A two-class period session that leads students to rewrite prose as free verse poetry, incorporating poetic devices and symbolism. Target audience: Middle school students. (Can be adapted for high school.)
